The Sixth Island — the Name Matthew Flinders called Coochiemudlo Island 225 years ago
The Flinders’ Day re-enactment at Norfolk Beach July 21, 2024, is also a celebration of Matthew Flinders naming of Coochiemudlo Island as The Sixth Island, 225 years ago.
The Norfolk entered Moreton Bay 14th July 1799, visited Bribie Island, and then explored southward seeking inland rivers.
Flinders rowed ashore to explore the island we now call Coochiemudlo Island. He took a sextant reading. He noticed pandanus palms, but the beach was totally deserted. There were dog paw prints in the sand and signs of human habitation.
On July 19th, 1799, Flinders named the island the sixth island.
Norfolk Beach is one of four heritage listed sites on Coochiemudlo Island and this beach is part of the heritage listed Emerald Fringe.
